Bengaluru: When BJP candidate Tejasvi Surya got into the fray, it was an unwelcome atmosphere with speculations rife on whether he would live up to the expectations. On Thursday he gave his party a reason to cheer, leading by a large margin in the Bengaluru South Assembly Constituency.

The demise of Ananth Kumar had left a void in the constituency, leaving the party with a rather young Tejasvi Surya and Ananth Kumar's wife Tejaswini Ananth Kumar for options.

Speaking to DH, Surya said that he would attribute this victory to the efforts by BJP workers and the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"It is the immense popularity of Modi in Bengaluru and across the nation which mattered. Every vote that is cast on lotus symbol today is a vote in recognition of the dedication and of a lifetime commitment of Modi to the motherland," he said adding, "When the PM chose me as a candidate, it was a message to the youth that he wants the youngsters to lead."

"3.25 lakh + vote margin!! Bengaluru South, you have given me so much love. You made history today. Come, let's firmly put #Bengaluru on the global map. Dedicate victory to Sri Anantkumar, Sri BN Vijaykumar and countless karyakartas of BJP martyred in Mangaluru, Kerala & WB" he tweeted.
