Newly-elected Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna to resign

Last Updated 24 May 2019, 06:06 IST

Prajwal Revanna, the lone JD(S) candidate who won the Lok Sabha election from Hassan, announced Friday that he will resign in order to vacate the seat for his grandfather, HD Deve Gowda who lost from Tumkur.

"I thought about this all night and I've arrived at this decision," Prajwal said. "I don't intend to disrespect thr people of Hassan. But Deve Gowda is the foundation of our party and we need to restore his place," he said.

Prajwal is the son of Public Works Minister HD Revanna, one of Deve Gowda's sons.

His decision to resign comes less than 24 hours of the declaration of the Lok Sabha election results on Thursday.

The JD(S) contested the polls from seven out of 28 Lok Sabha seats, with Prajwal being the only winner. The regional party's alliance partner Congress contested 21 seats and won just one.

Deve Gowda, who won from Hassan in the 2014 polls, shifted to Tumkur in order to launch Prajwal. In that bid, Gowda himself lost Tumkur against BJP's GS Basavaraju.
