Childhood interest to cook turned into passion

Last Updated 14 January 2019, 09:23 IST

Deep Singh Bawa started baking at the age of 14. He realised his dream after working in the hotel industry for over a decade and then started Home Bakers India in 2015. It connects enthusiasts, bakers, educators, sellers and brands. It’s also a marketing platform that brings together people in the baking sector.
In an interview with Metrolife, Deep talks about what made him turn a hotelier and later return to his passion, baking.

When did your interest in baking take seed?
As a kid, I used to watch the cookery shows on Doordarshan. I would ask my mother to note the recipe and make it. I was 14 years old when I first started baking. I fell in love with the process and there has been no looking back. When my peers studied for board exams, I burnt the midnight oil baking. I completed my bachelors in Hotel Management from IHM, Aurangabad and went on to do my MBA from Aston Business School. I worked in the hotel industry for a decade and launched Home Bakers in July 2015.

How different is your company from the rest of the baker portals?
Home Bakers India is essentially a B2B marketing platform. It has four verticals — bakers, educators, sellers and brands. We deliver in both digital and offline format in India and abroad. We are giving a structure to the baking industry. In a sense, we are also a management or PR consultancy that pushes our existing clients and brands to deliver better quality products and reach the customers.

What are the services that you offer?
We are associated with national and international baking events where bakers attend and interact with others in the industry. We promote various baking brands. We also help sellers and distributors with their products to reach bakers. We also conduct road shows with our brands and educator partners, thereby, bringing together a larger reach by medium of digital and offline.

What are the unique aspects of your company?
The USP are people behind the concept and the experience that I’ve had over the years in the hospitality industry, be it education or travel around the world. It is this wealth of knowledge that has enabled us in the company to service our clients and deliver better marketing campaigns for brands and structure the baking Industry in India.
