In a shocking revelation, at least 533 officials in Kerala Police have criminal cases lodged against them.

The officials from civil police officer to IGP are among those who are in the list, according to information collected from the police headquarters by advocate D B Binu, General Secretary of Human Rights Defence Forum, under the Right to Information Act.

The details of the police officers involved in criminal cases were submitted by DGP Jacob Punnoose in a sealed cover to the High Court on August 8, 2011. The contents weren’t disclosed. Binu said he had also sought details of the list of criminal police officers submitted by former ADGP Sibi Mathews to the government. But that plea was declined.

Cases against the police officers range from murder to rape. The officials, including women police personnel, have 29 vigilances against them, 36 CBI cases, and seven cases relating to excise and forest department.

Among the who’s who in the list is IGP Tomin J Thachankery, who was suspended from service after he went on a trip to the Gulf without seeking permission of the previous government.
