Modi's magical train headed for disaster: Rahul

Last Updated 21 September 2018, 11:47 IST

In a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said after four year's of BJP rule, India looked like a "train driven to disaster by an autocratic, incompetent and arrogant driver”.

Addressing the Congress Parliamentary Party meeting here, Rahul said the people of the country were looking up to the Congress and its allies to help remove the Modi government and replace with one which will listens to them.

In a stinging attack on the BJP over corruption, Rahul said that Modi came to power over claims that he would wipe out corruption in the country and provide a “very clean government.”

“The Rafale scam, involving over 1.3 lakh crore of public money and designed to bail out debt-ridden corporate cronies of Modiji is a symbol of the true 'sanskar' (character) of this government – 'Raam naam japna, paraya maal apna' (pretend to be a saint, but being very greedy),” Rahul said.

The Congress president said the “crisis of governance” – marked by corruption, economic failure, incompetence and spread of social divisiveness had peaked under the Modi government and asked Congress lawmakers to provide an alternative.

“There is a rising tide of anger against the current ruling dispensation that calls upon all of us to work very hard to give the people of India the alternative they deserve – an alternative to the bogus promise of Modiji’s ‘Achche Din’,” he said.

Rahul recalled how Modi used to say India was a slow “passenger train” for 70 years after Independence and how under his guidance the country would become a sleek and shining “magical train” destined for “achche din” (better days).

“Four years of Modi rule later, sadly, India today looks more like a train that is being driven to disaster by an autocratic, incompetent and arrogant driver, who does not care what happens to the passengers he is responsible for,” Rahul said.

“The people of India are demanding change. They will no longer be fooled by your magical train that is headed for a bad accident,” the Congress president said.

Rahul spelt out his plan of cornering the Modi government on its failure to deliver on creating jobs, doubling farmers income, growth for businesses, returning black money stashed in Swiss banks, depositing Rs 15 lakh in every bank account, lowering petrol prices, ensuring the safety of women and justice for Dalits.
