Covid-19: India's active cases cross 1.5 lakh-mark amid surge in some states

India added 14,119 new Covid-19 cases on Monday as the total number of active cases crossed 1.5 lakh after 17 days.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the country stands at 1,10,05,850. The death toll increased to 1,56,385 with 83 new fatalities, the Health Ministry said.

According to the health ministry, the surge in active cases is due to a spike in the number of daily infections in Maharashtra, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh.

Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the Covid-19 situation across the country and the progress in the vaccination drive.

According to the health ministry, 3.07 lakh beneficiaries were administered the Covid-19 vaccine on Monday with Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka being the top two states in the immunization drive on Monday.

Of the 3,07,238 persons who received the jab on Monday, 50,201 were from Uttar Pradesh while 30,586 were from Karnataka. Of the 3.07 lakh vaccinated till 6 pm on Monday, 1,59,550 beneficiaries were vaccinated for 1st dose and 1,47,688 HCWs received 2nd dose of vaccine as per the provisional report.

A total of 1,14,24,094 vaccine doses have been given through 2,44,071 sessions, as per the provisional report till 6 pm on Monday.

Two deaths:

Two women died in Kerala after vaccination in the last 24 hours ending 6:00 pm on Monday. A 24-year-old woman, a resident of Kannur, died after 17 days of vaccination due to intracranial bleeding, the health ministry said.

A 49-year-old woman, a resident of Wayanad, died after two days of vaccination, the ministry said adding that the suspected reason for her death was myocardial infarction. Post-mortem has been done in both cases and reports were awaited.

These include 64,25,060 HCWs (67.3%) who have taken the 1st dose and 11,15,542 HCWs who have taken the 2nd dose, along with 38,83,492 FLWs (1st dose) (40.1%).

While the countrywide vaccination drive was rolled out on 16th Jan 2021, vaccination of the FLWs started from 2nd Feb 2021.

Four States/UTs – Lakshadweep, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan -- have vaccinated more than 75% of registered HCWs and FLWs for the first dose.

Eight States – Bihar, Tripura, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh -- have vaccinated more than 75% of the registered HCWs for the first dose.
