Flood situation still worrisome in Assam

Flood situation in Assam remained worrisome on Sunday with at least 30 people reportedly being killed in a fresh spell of floods.

At least two more people died due to floods in Assam on Saturday. Since the onset of floods in the state last month, about 36 lakh people have been affected.

The worst affected districts are Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Bongaigaon, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Barpeta, Goalpara, Dhubri, Darrang, Morigaon and Sonitpur, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said. In total, 23 districts of the state remained affected in the state on Saturday.

The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger mark in Guwahati, Nematighat in Jorhat, Tezpur in Sonitpur, Goalpara and Dhubri towns. Authorities have opened 700 relief camps and distribution centres.

Meanwhile, in Meghalaya, the plight of the people may not end soon as the plains of West Garo Hills are constantly being inundated by the overflowing rivers in the region.  

The Garo Hills floods have affected nearly 2 lakh people with over 25,000 people sheltered in 26 relief camps.


Lightning kills 41
At least 41 people were killed after being struck by lightning in different parts of Odisha in the last two days, PTI reports from Bhubaneswar.

The Odisha Disaster Management Control Room said that people have lost their lives due to lightning and thunderstorm in 10 districts of the state since Saturday.
