'Humanitarian obligation to give refuge to migrants'

On International Migrants Day West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that it is a “humanitarian obligation” to provide refuge to migrants. Banerjee who is one of the most vocal critics of the ongoing National Register of Citizens ( NRC) exercise in Assam made the comments in a tweet on Tuesday.

“ Today is International Migrants Day. It is our humanitarian obligation to give refuge to migrants,” tweeted Banerjee. She also said that in West Bengal her government will take care of anyone seeking shelter in the state.

“ In #Bangla we will take care of anyone who seeks shelter in our state, to the best of our abilities,” tweeted the Chief Minister.

Earlier the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo has indicated that people whose names were left out of the draft NRC in Assam may get shelter in West Bengal. Forty lakh people have been left out of the draft NRC in Assam.
