Mumbai court gives death penalty to Saki Naka rape-murder convict

The victim, aged between 32 to 34, was raped and brutalised inside an open tempo

A Mumbai court on Thursday awarded death sentence to the accused in the sensational rape-murder case in Saki Naka in Mumbai - which bore similarity to the gruesome Nirbhaya incident.

Considering the case as “rarest of the rare”, Judge H C Shende, who presides over a fast-track court at the City Civil & Sessions Court of Dindoshi ordered Mohan Chauhan (45) to be hanged till death.

The rape-murder incident took place on September 10, 2021 in Khairani Road area of Saki Naka.

The victim, aged between 32 to 34, was raped and brutalised inside an open tempo, parked off the Rashid Compound off the Chandivali Studios. After the rape, the accused had inserted an iron road in her private parts rupturing her intestine and left her to die.

A watchman alerted the Mumbai Police main control room informing about a man beating up a woman.

Immediately, a police team was dispatched which reached the spot within 10 minutes and found the woman in a pool of blood.

She died in the civic-run Rajawadi Hospital after battling for life for 33 hours.

The Mumbai Police formed a Special Investigation Team and filed the chargesheet on September 28, 2021.

Chauhan was convicted under sections of the Indian Penal Code and Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
