Abhirami, a 39-year old woman hailing from Neyveli taluk of Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, heaved a deep sigh of relief when she laid eyes on her baby.

Married for 19 years, Abhirami had to experience the tragedy of miscarriages 15 times. Due to her weak obstetric history, her uterus was not able to carry a child through all the trimesters.

Though she underwent treatment in many hospitals in the last four years, the results were the same.

Her last four pregnancies  ended up in pre-term delivery, which resulted in the death of the prematurely born babies.

Many specialists and gynaecologists were of the opinion that with such a weak obstetric history, the chances of going through the full term of pregnancy and  delivering a healthy baby were remote. But Abhirami was undaunted and was determined to deliver a baby.

“She requested us to undertake this ‘Conception Challenge’ as she chose to call it. She was  very adamant in spite of the fact that she had failed  15 times, she was determined to go for it the 16th time.

“Perhaps for the first time,  a woman, who was unable to go through the full-term pregnancy 15 times, delivered a healthy baby when she became pregnant for the 16th time,” Dr K S  Jeyarani, a senior gynaecologist in the state claimed.

Citing medical records, Jeyarani said the previous attempt was reported at Command Hospital in Haryana in 2009, when a woman had delivered a baby on the ninth time after eight pregnancy failures.
