PAGE to observe World Alzheimer’s Month in Sept

People’s Association for Geriatric Empowerment (PAGE) will observe World Alzheimer’s Month in September.

In Mangaluru, the World Alzheimer’s Month will be launched at Kadri Park at 7 am on September, said PAGE President Dr Olinda Pereira.

Addressing media persons on Tuesday, she said that the World Alzheimer’s Month is the international campaign by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) to create awareness on dementia.

Dementia is a collective name for progressive degenerative brain syndromes which affect memory, thinking, behaviour and emotions. Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia. Loss of memory and mood changes are the symptoms of the disease. Someone in the world develops dementia every three seconds, she said and added that the theme for this year’s World Alzheimer’s Month campaign is ‘Every three seconds’.

PAGE Secretary Jeradin D’Souza said that 50 million people in the world suffer from dementia.

He stated memory walk and memory games will be conducted in the launch programme.

Also, awareness programmes will be held all over the month. A fancy dress competition will be held at Forum Mall. Alzheimer’s Day will be observed at Town Hall on September 22 at 9 am. ‘ ‘Purple run’ will be conducted on September 30. A memory clinic workshop will be held on October 1.
