The bronze medal finish at the Asian Championships in Kobe, Japan, earlier this month has shown that Tintu’s preparations are on the right track. The meets in Europe should allow her to sharpen her competitive experience, according to her coach PT Usha.

Tintu will open her European stint on August 2 in Sweden at the Carlsberg meeting before travelling to Holland for a meet in Amsterdam on August 6. Copenhagen in Denmark will be her next stop on August 11 and the Indian ace will wind up the tour in Brussels on August 13.

“Her training has been going on really well. We are around the same stage where we were last year, in terms of fitness and preparations,” said Usha.

Tintu had made a big move last season, ducking under two minutes and then breaking Shiny Wilson’s national record in the 800M with an effort of 1:59.17 at the World Athletics Final in Split, Croatia, in September.

This time around, the competitions might not be at the top level but the trip will certainly be beneficial, felt Usha.

“The four events will give her the right kind of exposure and help her to wipe out any fear she has of competing in international meets,” said Usha.

Tintu is yet to qualify for the Olympic Games but Usha felt it was only a matter of time. “Because of the injuries she suffered late last season, her training was being affected. Now things are falling into place,” she said.

Four competitions in such a short period won’t be a burden, felt Usha. “The first three meets are well spaced out. The problem is only the last meet. If you compete in major international meets, you have to run the rounds and there could only be a day’s gap between the semifinal and the final. That is why we decided to accept the entry for the Brussels meet. I think it will benefit her that way.”

The World Championships are in Daegu, South Korea, from August 27 to September 4.
