The BJP, on Thursday, stepped up its attack on the Congress, asking its president Rahul Gandhi to clear his stand on the unaccounted money allegedly sent to his party office through hawala route.

The BJP fielded Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat to take on the opposition party, after it had earlier cited ‘confessional’ statements made to the Income Tax (I-T) department by associates of Minister D K Shivakumar, to claim that money in a hawala case went to the Congress headquarters on Akbar Road.

On Wednesday, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra had attacked the Congress by reading out the ‘confessional’ statements made by Anjaneya, liaison officer at Karnataka Bhavan, New Delhi, and other associates of Shivakumar.

“The Congress president, his party’s spokesperson should tell people about the source of the unaccounted money and where it all went,” the minister told a press conference. The charges are based on confessions made by the suspects, including those who are in government service, on oath, he said.

The I-T department had raided the premises of Shivakumar and those of some of his associates last year and claimed to have recovered a large amount of cash.
