JOIN USAbide by security norms, IGP warns co-operative banks
The warning has come in the wake of increasing cases of burglary, particularly in co-operative banks. The latest was the burglary in the Kumta Chetana Cooperative Bank, which was unravelled on Thursday.
Karwar police with the assistance of Sullia police of Dakshina Kannada unearthed this burglary case, recovering 5.9 kg of gold ornaments worth Rs 89 lakh and a cash of Rs 81,500. They also arrested the accused Shrinanda Rama Naik (24) of Harita village in Kumta taluk.
The incident had taken place on June 22. Similarly, one more such burglary had taken place at a cooperative bank at Kambadakone in Baindoor, from where about 12 kg of gold had been stolen. The one detected on Thursday was the second major burglary in the last three months, according to the IGP.
“Most of the customers who pledge their gold are from middle and lower classes. It is the duty of the banks to ensure security to them. Unfortunately, they are not following the guidelines, and the theft cases are on increase,” Hosur regretted during a press conference on Thursday.
He said the police officials will be visiting all cooperative banks soon to confirm that the banks have taken sufficient security measures.
“If it is found that they are not following the security norms, show-cause notice will be issued to the bank authorities. They have to face legal actions too,” he warned.
