The Karnataka State Dr Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University will soon get a new building at Sathagalli in the city.

The authorities are planning to shift the institution, which is functioning from the building of the Department of Primary and Secondary Education on JLB Road in Lakshmipuram, after the Education department asked the varsity to vacate the premise.

Vice Chancellor Sarvamangala Shankar said that the new building will be built on eight acres of land sanctioned by MUDA near Sathagalli bus depot. The varsity has floated a tender to prepare a blueprint for the same.

The VC said that the University Syndicate members have agreed to build the new building and the varsity has Rs 12 crore and Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy has promised to provide an additional Rs 15 crore.

“The new building will have an administrative office, staff rooms, class rooms, hostel, auditorium, guest house and other facilities. The varsity, which was established in 2008-2009, was initially functioning from the MDC building near Vijaynagar water tank. It was later shifted to the present building.

Additional courses
The varsity has also decided to include more courses in the post graduate level. Music, Science and Technology, management courses will be added to the existing syllabus. As opportunities are very few, new subjects have been planned as they would help the graduates to work in other sectors too.

At present, the university is providing academic training through courses such as BA Music, BA Drama, BA Dance, MA Music, MA Drama, MA Dance and other forms of Folk Art. Diploma courses in some of the above disciplines are being offered to enable more number of students to seek admission.
