Court sentences rapist duo to 20 years RI

Two youth declared guilty of raping a first year PUC student were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 20 years by the Second Additional District and Sessions & Special POCSO court Judge Pallavi B R on Wednesday.

The court also directed the rapists Sachin Kumar (22) of Koppada Bailu near Koyyuru in Beltangady taluk and K T Mathew alias Manu (24) of Lala Patlady village to pay a fine of Rs 20,000.

Case details

On March 7, 2015, Sachin and Manu who were in a car abducted the victim who was returning home from college. The duo took the minor to a remote hill in Koyyuru and sexually assaulted her by turns.

On reaching home, the victim informed her mother about the sexual assault. Based on a complaint filed by the mother, Beltangady police registered a case under POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act.

The then Inspector B R Lingappa filed the charge-sheet in the court. Public Prosecutor C Venkataramanaswamy submitted as many as 23 documents and 19 witnesses during the trial.

Special POCSO court Judge Pallavi B R upheld the arguments of public prosecutor and sentenced Sachin and Mathew to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment under section 376 (d) of IPC and POCSO (col 6).

Out of the Rs 20,000 fine collected from the youth convicted of gangrape, Rs 18,000 should be handed over to the victim, the court ordered.

Addl imprisonment

The duo would undergo six months additional rigorous imprisonment if they fail to pay the fine, the judge ordered and directed the victim to seek additional compensation from the District Legal Services Authority.
