Yeddyurappa mounts pressure on HDK on farm loan waiver

BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa on Saturday called for Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy’s ouster if he failed to announce a farm loan waiver in his budget.

Yeddyurappa, who identifies himself as a farmers leader, was addressing the BJP’s Raitha Morcha meet here where he mounted pressure on the Congress-JD(S) coalition, targeting Kumaraswamy on his promise of waiving farm loans.

“Let’s wait for about a month till Kumaraswamy presents his budget. If there’s no loan waiver after that, we should put up a fight to ensure Kumaraswamy is stripped of power,” he said.

On May 30, Kumaraswamy said he needed 15 days to come out with a plan to implement a loan waiver. After a meeting with farmers, Kumaraswamy had said crop loans procured by small and marginal farmers between April 1, 2009 and December 31, 2017 will be waived in two phases.

Yeddyurappa said the father and son - former prime minister HD Deve Gowda and Kumaraswamy - should implement the loan waiver if they were really honest. “The father-son duo, if they were really concerned about farmers, should have imposed a condition that they will join hands with the Congress only if the latter supported farm loan waiver,” Yeddyurappa said.

Instead, they have imposed only those conditions that are favourable for them to remain in power, he added.

The saffron party would not allow a repeat of what former chief minister Siddaramaiah did, Yeddyurappa said. “Loans borrowed by small and marginal farmers were waived by Siddaramaiah. We won’t keep quiet if Kumaraswamy simply does the same,” he warned.
