Dear Madam,

My son is studying third-year Architecture and wants to do his internship abroad. Kindly suggest places or opportunities. Also suggest universities that offer a master’s programme in Architecture in Europe, Australia and the US, including the admission procedures.

Shekhar

Dear Shekhar,

Your son can pursue courses like Masters in Architecture, Project Management, Interior Design and Construction Management. These programmes are offered in all the countries you have mentioned. He needs to take an English language test like TOEFL iBT or IELTS academic. For US universities, he also needs to write the GRE.

As far as internships are concerned, there are three options: You approach a professional company which provide internship opportunities abroad, or you use your personal contacts in other countries and lastly, the School where he is currently pursuing his BArch might have internship arrangements with organisations in other countries.

Dear Madam,

My daughter is planning to do BCom and then wishes to pursue a Master course in the US. Kindly suggest reputed universities in the US, eligibility criteria, admission procedure and scholarship opportunities.

Latha

Dear Latha,

After BCom, your daughter can choose to pursue her Masters from a wide range of subject choices. International Business Management, Marketing and Advertising, Luxury Brand Management, Business Administration, Finance, Accounts, Human Resource Management, Entrepreneurship, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Retail Management, Investment and Risk Management and Banking and Operations Management are some of the popular courses. She would have to write her GMAT or GRE and TOEFL iBT.

Admission procedure includes submitting documents like Academic transcripts, resume, letters of recommendation and writing a strong statement of purpose explaining her career goals and reasons for choosing to study in the United States.

Scholarships will be based on her GMAT or GRE scores and her GPA in BCom.

Most universities in the US generally accept students with a four-year degree like BE or BTech. What your daughter can also do is send her BCom transcripts for a World Education Services evaluation to show that her three-year degree is equal to a four-year US undergraduate degree. Alternately she can apply to universities in the UK, New Zealand and Australia where her three-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted and the only exam to be taken as an entry requirement is the IELTS Academic test.

Dear Madam,

I am doing my BSc in Biotechnology. I wish to pursue in the same field, and I also look forward to studying abroad. Kindly suggest on the universities or institutes and the exams that I need to take up, including scholarships.

Mythri

Dear Mythri,

The exams that you need to write depends on the country where you wish to study. US, Canada, Singapore and Europe need GRE and TOEFL iBT or IELTS academic. The UK, Australia and New Zealand need only the IELTS academic test. Since you are studying BSc and not BTech or BE, I would recommend UK Universities. They have some of the world’s best research universities for Biotechnology and they will accept your three-year degree programme. The duration of all Masters programmes in the UK is for one year. So, you not only save on living expenses but also move on to the job market soon.

Dear Madam,

I am studying Class 11 (PCMB) under CBSE Board. I wish to change my stream after Class 12. For CLAT, what are the topics I need to focus on? Do I have scope for working abroad? If yes, which are the best countries that I can try and what is the qualifications that I need to attain?

Nissy

Dear Nissy,

For a start, focus on your Class 11 and Class 12 CBSE and CLAT exam. CLAT exam comprises of a section in English (comprehension and grammar), Elementary Math (Class 10 level), General Knowledge and Current affairs, Legal Aptitude and Logical Reasoning. As far as jobs go, there is always plenty available for hardworking and talented students. CLAT exam is a common entrance test for Law Schools in India. If you wish to study abroad then you don’t need CLAT. You need to only write your IELTS academic test and LNAT (for the UK) and LSAT (for the US).

Dear Madam,

My son is in his eight semester BSMS (Mathematics). He would like to pursue research in Mathematics in one of the best universities either in the US or Europe after he completes his MS in 2020. Kindly suggest good universities which offer scholarships and also mention the fee structure, admission procedure, contact details, essential prerequisites, etc.

SBV Sreenivas

Dear Sreenivas,

Cambridge, Warwick, Edinburgh and Glasgow in the UK, ETH Zurich Switzerland, Ecole Polytechnique Switzerland and France, KTH Royal Institute of Technology Sweden, Pierre and Marie Curie University Paris France, University of Bonn, RWTH Aachen University and Humboldt University in Germany, Delft University of Technology and Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands and KU Leuven Belgium are among the best in the UK for Mathematics.

In the US, MIT, UC Berkeley, Harvard, Princeton and Stanford are the top universities known for their Math programmes.

The UK universities cost around Rs 25 to 35 lakhs for one year for tuition and living expenses. All UK Masters programmes are for a duration of one year. The US Masters will cost around Rs 45 to 55 lakhs a year for tuition and living expenses. The US programmes are for a duration of two years.

While public universities in Europe charge a very nominal amount of tuition fee, private universities charge their students around Rs 10 to 25 lakhs just for tuition fee. It is best to check on each of the university websites about their tuition and living costs for international students.

The entry requirement for the US and Europe is a good GPA in the undergraduate program, GRE of 327 and above, TOEFL iBT of 100 and above. Scholarships will be awarded to students with strong academic credentials. Knowledge of a European language like German or French will strengthen one’s resume. One could apply for scholarships within the university as well as with external organisations.

Dear Madam,

I have done my BE in ECE, MTech in CNE (Computer Network Engineering). I have experience in marketing for seven years. But, I am very keen to pursue my PhD in Computer Networking in the US with funding. Since I have already done my masters, I do not want to do masters again. Kindly suggest best universities in the field that offers to fund. I am also planning to take up my GRE in August. Since I do not have any research experience will it be difficult to get admitted? If I don’t get funding, how much would it cost to pursue my PhD?

Kanchana

Dear Kanchana,

Most PhD programmes are fully funded. The only way you can get accepted into a PhD programme is by communicating directly with professors of various universities who are already into research in your area of interest.

A good research proposal, a statement of purpose which clearly addresses your interest in their university and the particular department you are applying to, a resume which highlights all your academic achievements, research works and publications and work experience will help them decide if you are a worthy candidate. You need to convince them that you have excellent reading and writing skills required to carry out research work. Even though you do not have any research experience, you should be able to prove to them that you are a strong candidate and will be an asset to their department.
