Microsoft offers free Copilot-powered productivity tools to US govt agencies

With Copilot AI-powered Microsoft 365 applications, the US government agencies will be able to enhance citizen services, optimise supply chains and increase field responsiveness, directly impacting everyday public outcomes

Software technology major Microsoft has announced free Copilot AI-powered services for a limited time to the US government agencies.

The company will be offering one year of free access to Microsoft 365 productivity tools such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel Sheets, generative Artificial Intelligence (gen AI)-powered Copilot AI services, and cloud server connectivity at no cost for up to 12 months for state-run US General Services Administration (GSA) entities.

"Our commitment goes beyond technology and savings. Microsoft is also committing $20 million in additional support services to help agencies implement the offers and maximise the value of these services, along with complimentary cost-optimisation workshops that will enable agencies to identify opportunities to reduce software duplication, automate services and improve cross-team interoperability. These investments reflect our belief that technology’s greatest value lies in its ability to empower people," said Microsoft.

With Microsoft 365 applications, the US government agencies will be able to enhance citizen services, optimise supply chains and increase field responsiveness, directly impacting everyday public outcomes.

With Copilot-powered bots integration with the public response system, the US government will be able to automate workflows, analyse data and collaborate more efficiently. This can free up public servants to focus on more important work.

Considering the collaboration with the US government, Microsoft is assuring high security cover. It is integrating the system with Microsoft Entra ID and Sentinel, which promises advanced identity and threat protection.

Microsoft's move comes a month after Google announced free Gemini AI tools for students in the US and India.

With Google AI Pro plan, students get access to advanced multi-modal GeminI AI models, including Gemini, Veo 3 text-to-video generator and more.

With access to Notebook LM and Deep Research tools, students can do research work faster, and the AI chatbot, which now runs on the latest Gemini 2.5 Pro large language model, can offer writing assistance as well.
