Vibrant celebrations mark Int’l Women’s Day

International Women’s Day was observed by various organisations by creating awareness on sanitary napkins, felicitating women achievers, offering gift vouchers among others in and around Mangaluru on Friday.

Women passengers alighting at the Mangaluru International Airport were in for a surprise when the women staff greeted them with a red rose. All-women team handled the air traffic at the airport.

JCI India and Niine Movement jointly organised ‘Run4Niine’, a nationwide run, in order to create awareness about sanitary napkins.

JCI India Zone 15 Ambassador Soujanya Hegde flagged off the run at Bunts Hostel Circle which ended at Mallikatte.

The run was organised to spread awareness on menstrual hygiene and to put an end to myths related to menstruation.

Run4Niine was simultaneously organised across
500 cities and 20 States in
India.

Run4Niine was supported by the Niine Movement which launched the nationwide #18to82 campaign to bridge the gap between the 18% of menstruating women in India who use sanitary napkins, and the 82% women using unhygienic and unsafe alternatives such as rags, hay and even ash, according to a press release.

Unsung heroines

Mount Carmel Central School celebrated “International Women’s Day” by highlighting the importance of women in the family, who have the power to create, nurture and transform the society. Mount Carmel School felicitated eight women-- the unsung heroines in St Antony’s Waste Management System, who strive hard to make Mangaluru a clean city.

The women were escorted to the stage by students amidst the vibrant beats of “Chende” and were presented with a shawl and cash by School Administrator Sr Carissima, Principal Sr Melissa, Coordinator Sr Marie Lucy and Vice Principal Sr Lidwyn Pinto.

A musical skit and mime on the theme of women empowerment was enacted by the students.

St Agnes College

The Women’s Cell in St Agnes College organised a programme on the theme “Think Equal, Build Smart and Innovate for Change”. St Agnes College, Post Graduate Studies, Head of English Department Dr Geralyn Pinto was the chief guest while Principal Dr Sr Jeswina presided over the programme.

Srinivas College

The Indian Pharmaceutical Association, DK district local branch in association with Srinivas College of Pharmacy organised a programme on the occasion of ‘International Women’s Day’ at the college. It was inaugurated by Vani Ummakka, a Life Line Volunteer of Suicide Lifeline (A Unit of Susheg Charitable Trust).

She urged young women to get inspired by women’s contributions to the society and utilise opportunities that come their way.

Many restaurants had served women’s day special dessert and also gave away gift voucher to women visiting the restaurants.
