BJP wins Tripura, piggy-backs on regional partners to clinch Nagaland and Meghalaya

The ruling BJP managed to notch-up a morale-boosting win on its 'Mission Northeast' on Thursday by retaining Tripura emphatically, despite anti-incumbency and newcomer Tipra Motha playing spoilers to its party, while also piggy-backing to power in Nagaland on Neiphiu Rio-led NDPP's shoulder.In Meghalaya, it was poised to be part of the ruling dispensation again as a junior partner, given that chief minister Conrad Sangma's NPP has fallen short of majority while winning the lion's share of 26 seats in the 60-member assembly.

Meghalaya BJP president Ernest Mawrie said the saffron party will submit a letter of support to the NPP on Thursday night to form the next government in the state.

BJP, which contested the assemblyelectionsalone and won two seats despite being in an alliance government with the NPP during the last five years, would have bagged more seats had the two allies fought in partnership, he said. (PTI)

History was scripted in Nagaland on Thursday when the state elected its first women legislators in its 60 years of statehood.

The two women lawmakers - Hekhani Jakhalu and Salhoutuonuo Kruse of the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) are greenhorns in politics but defeated the sitting MLAs in Western Angami and Dimapur-III seats respectively.

In a major setback to the Congress, its Meghalaya unit president and Lok Sabha MP Vincent Pala lost the assembly election. He was defeated by the NPP candidate Santa Mary Shylla.

Pala was contesting from the Sutnga Saipung assembly seat. He got 14,866 votes while Shylla bagged 16,719 votes. The United Democratic Party candidate Shitlang Pale came third with 10,224 votes.

BJP candidate Krison Langstang was a distant fourth with only 420 votes.

'Lone battle' for too many parties spur fear of fractured mandate in Meghalaya

With the parties fighting a "lone battle" against each other and some smaller ones focussing on community and region-specific issues again, leaders and political observers fear the repetition of a fractured mandate, something the state has witnessed since 1976. The fear has deepened with the smaller parties, having a track record of winning six to 20 seats in the past few elections, are focussing on community and region-specific issues in the elections.

"Elections in Meghalaya are fought on ethnic and sub-regional lines and personal loyalties, so the mandate cannot but be fractured. No political party in the state has access to all ethnic groups and the people in three hill regions, Khasi, Jaintia and Garo hills. Hence no one gets an absolute majority and the coalition government has become the norm. It is not going to be an exception this time too," H. Srikanth, a professor of political science at North East Hills University (NEHU), in Shillong, told DH.

In Meghalaya, poll observers are expecting a fractured mandate again as all 12 parties contested elections without any pre-poll ties. No political party has got absolute majority in Meghalaya since 1976.

The actual battle, this time, however, was between the National People's Party (NPP) and Trinamool Congress, which became a significant player for the first time in the state. The United Democratic Party (UDP), a regional party, focussing on the issues of Khasi and Jaintia tribes, could be another significant player.

In Nagaland, the ruling NDPP-BJP alliance is comparatively better placed as the Opposition Naga People's Front (NPF) and Congress contested only in 22 constituencies each out of the 59 seats.

The NDPP-BJP contested the elections on a 40:20 seat sharing arrangement. BJP expects that its tally will increase this time, from 12 in 2018, as it worked hard for peace and development in the insurgency-hit state in the past five years.

The ruling BJP and the Opposition Congress and CPI (M) are expecting a lot from their respective alliances in Tripura.

Counting of votes for Assembly elections in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland began at 8 am on Thursday amid tight security arrangements.

Polling in Tripura was conducted on February 16 while the same was done in Nagaland and Meghalaya on February 27. The Assembly in the three states have 60 members each.

The verdicts in the three states areconsidered as an important mandate ahead of Lok Sabha elections next year. Eyes are on the outcomes of the alliances in Tripura and Nagaland.

BJP was almost non-existent in Meghalaya till the 2018 Assembly elections, when it bagged two seats in the 60-member Assembly. It subsequently became a minor partner in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government led by the National People's Party (NPP). BJP, however, quit the MDA government just before the polls with a bigger target of forming its own government and fielded candidates in all 60 seats.

The party is not only levelling charges of corruption against its former ally, NPP and rival Congress, but is aggressively pushing the narrative that BJP is not against the Christians, nor against their culture, tradition and food habits (particularly beef).
