Cyclone Tauktae news highlights: Storm moves northwards, continues to show weakening trend, says IMDCyclone Tauktae early on Tuesday morning moved northwards clearing the Gujarat coast and continued to show a weakening trend, IMD said. The threat had forced the evacuation of over 1.5 lakh people in Gujarat and leaving two barges with 410 people on board adrift in the Arabian Sea. Six persons were killed in Maharashtra's Konkan region in separate incidents related to the severe cyclonic storm and three sailors remained missing after two boats sank in the sea, officials said.

While Coast Guard Ship Samarth rescues 15 fishermen at sea off Goa and Tows the boat Milad to safety, another Coast Guard Ship Samrat sails out from Mumbai to attend to a distress call from vessel off Mumbai named GAL Constructor with 137 personnel on board.

Two more Coast Guard Ships at sea have been diverted and directed to rush to Bombay High off Heera oil fields for Rescue Operations of the stranded crew onboard P-305.

Eight people have lost their lives so far in the Cyclone Tauktae-hit coastal and surrounding malnad districts of Karnataka, officials said on Monday.

According to a situation report by Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority officials, till this evening, 121 villages in seven districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Belagavi have been affected by the cyclone.

Rajnath asks three services to provide all assistance to civil administrations

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday directed the three services to provide all possible assistance to the civil administrations in the coastal states of Maharashtra and Gujarat in tackling the situation arising out of cyclone Tauktae.

Singh issued the instruction after reviewing the preparedness of the armed forces to deal with the fallout of the cyclone.

Indian Army puts 180 teams and 9 engineer task forces on standby

The Indian Army said on Monday it has put 180 teams and nine engineer task forces on standby to face any contingency as Cyclone Tauktae is likely to hit the Gujarat coast on Monday evening.

"Sector commanders and Divisional HQ (headquarter) are in touch with District Collectors and the Revenue Commissioner who is the nodal agency for relief activities in Gujarat," the Army said in a statement.

839 homes damaged in Maharashtra's Raigad as cyclone Tauktae strikes

In what is a concerning development, as many as 273 persons are stranded on a drifting barge off the Geeta oilfields of Bombay High region in the Arabian Sea, nearly 175 kmoff the Mumbai coast.

On receipt of a request for assistance forBarge 'P305' adrift off Heera Oil Fields, INS Kochi was sailed with a despatch for Search and Rescue (SAR) assistance.

Several other ships have been readied for HADR tasking in the wake of Cyclone Tauktae that has wreaked havoc along the West coast of India.

The ships are expected to reach the venue by evening, and other ships and an aircraft is also being prepared to go there for a search and rescue operation in the region clobbered by the passing Cyclone Tauktae.

Cyclone Tauktae: Barge with 273 on board adrift near Mumbai

A barge with 273 personnel on board has gone adrift off the Mumbai coast as the severe cyclonic storm 'Tauktae' over the Arabian Sea intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm and is expected to reach Gujarat coast Monday evening, officials said.

"On receipt of a request for assistance for Barge 'P305' adrift off Heera Oil Fields in Bombay High area with 273 personnel onboard, warship INS Kochi was sailed with a despatch for Search and Rescue (SAR) assistance," a Navy spokesperson said.

The oil fields are around 70 km southwest of Mumbai.(PTI)

Tauktae to cross Gujarat coast between 8 and 11 pm; one lakh people shifted to safer areas

CycloneTauktae, which has now intensified into an "extremely severe cyclonic storm", is likely to reach Gujarat coast by Monday evening and cross the state coast between 8 pm and 11 pm, the IMD said.

As a precautionary measure, the state administration shifted over one lakh people living in coastal areas of 17 districts to safer places till late Sunday night, and the work resumed on Monday morning, the government said in a release. (PTI)

Chopper to rescue 9 tugboat members stranded off Mangaluru coast

A chopper has landed in Mangalore airport on Monday to carry out the rescue operation of those nine members on board the tug boat, 'Coromondel' that had drifted after being cut loose from its anchorage point outside New Mangalore Port (NMP) due to Cyclone Tauktaeand got struck near Mulki Rocks, located four miles away from Mulki coast, said Deputy Commissioner Dr Rajendra K V.

After assessing the condition in sea, the rescue operations will be carried out. The tug had drifted in rough sea on Sunday and the Indian Coast Guard and Coastal Security Police personnel could not take up rescue operation owing to the rough sea with waves upto a height of six mts) and wind speed being above 25 knots. As a result, they remained stranded in the tug.

ICG's vessel INS Varaha is just 500 metres away from Mulki Rocks and is closely monitoring the situation.

In the meantime, rain stopped in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. The sky remained overcast.
