Samsung has launched the much-awaited Galaxy XR, the company's first-ever mixed reality headset.
Compared to the conventional MR gears, the new Galaxy XR comes in a compact form factor, resembling cool skiing glasses. It weighs around 545g with a forehead cushion, which ensures equal distribution of weight and a comfortable fit.
And, inside, it comes fully loaded with cutting-edge technology to deliver an immersive visual experience.

1) The headgear sports high-quality glass with 109 degrees horizontal and 100 degrees vertical field of view, and an in-built 4K Micro-OLED display with 3,552 x 3,840p resolution and 27 million pixels, and 6.3‑micron pixel pitch. It supports 60Hz/72Hz (default) and up to 90Hz refresh rate and play UHD 8K(7680 x 4320) and 60 frames per second (fps)

2) It houses Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset with Hexagon NPU. It promises an immersive experience with visual clarity and can run advanced generative Artificial Intelligence (gen AI) applications. It will have 16GB RAM and 256GB storage.
3) It houses a 6.5MP camera (18mm lens, f/2.0 aperture). Additionally, it comes with two High-resolution Pass-through cameras, six World-facing tracking cameras, four Eye-tracking cameras, five Inertial Measurement Units(IMUs), one Depth sensor and one Flicker sensor.

4) It boasts of Iris recognition, which will be used to unlock the device and to enter passwords in certain apps.
5) Galaxy XR houses two 2-way speakers (Woofer + Tweeter), a six-microphone array. Multiple microphones among the six microphones support the beamforming feature, depending on the use case.
6) It supports custom Interpupillary Distance (IPD) for Vision Correction (54~70mm). But the customer will have to separately purchase the custom optical inserts.
7) With a full charge, it can deliver 2.5 hours of battery usage, enough for the user to enjoy a full movie or a long gaming session.

8) Samsung's latest MR headset runs on the Android XR OS, co-developed by Google, Qualcomm and Samsung. Android XR is fully optimised to work on the Galaxy XR seamlessly. It boasts cutting-edge displays, Passthrough capabilities and natural multi-modal input.
9) All apps, including Over-The-Top (OTT) multimedia platforms such as Crunchyroll, HBO Max, Peacock, and gaming titles -- Mirrorscape, Owlchemy Labs, and Resolution Games and more built on the Android platform work out of the box on Galaxy XR. Google's core apps, such as Google Maps, will offer enhanced immersive 3D maps to explore global cities virtually, sitting at home.

Besides Google Maps and YouTube, Galaxy XR will also support the Gen AI Gemini app and be able to perform Circle to Search with hand gestures.

10) Custom-made Project Pulsar from Adobe can enable users to make cinematic video edits. He/she can add 3D depth and layer captions or icons behind subjects on a larger-than-life canvas. Samsung added that Calm, Fox Sports, MLB and 50 more custom-made apps exclusively for Galaxy XR will be released soon.
The Galaxy XR is now available in the US and South Korea for $1799 (approx. Rs 1,58,207) or $149 (around Rs 13,103)/month. Samsung is expected to release it in more global regions in the coming months.
