It's been a little over a month since the Monsoon season set foot in India. There is a lot of rain across the country, bringing huge respite from the intense summer heat.
Unlike the bright sunshine in the summer, the rainy season is accompanied by gloomy overcast weather. This makes many avoid stepping out.
However, if you are a photography enthusiast with an iPhone, it's a good time to explore not just the nature reserves but also the busy streets of the city to get some fascinating images. More rain means more opportunities to capture fun, dramatic scenes.
Besides big upgrades in terms of photography hardware, the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro series models boast of dedicated camera control button to capture photos quickly. It can also be used to adjust the depth of the field (aperture) to get the perfect portrait shot.
Professional photographer Bobby Roy has offered wonderful tips and tricks on how to get that perfect picture and videos this monsoon on an iPhone.
1. Use the 5x Tele Lens: On iPhone 16 Pro models, shoot from a distance using the 5x tele lens as it is perfect for candid rain moments and tight, cinematic frames.
2. Cinematic Mode (video, 4K): You can use the Cinematic mode of the iPhone 16 Pro Max to add drama with soft backgrounds to your videos in ultra 4k resolution.
3. Macro Mode: Get close to raindrops, flowers, or even glass surfaces. The detail is stunning and instantly adds mood to your photos. The iPhone 16 Pro captures amazing close-up details.
4. HEIF MAX / ProRAW: Try to use the HEIF Max mode to shoot the overcast skies, which will give you soft, diffused light. Shooting in HIEF Max mode retains excellent detail, natural tones, and gives you amazing editing flexibility later on.
5. Night Mode and Reflections: Rainy nights with city lights bouncing and wet roads create cinematic photographs. Do not forget to use the Night Mode on the main lens or ultrawide lens for sharp, glowing shots.
Gursimran Basra, another ace photographer, also offers great tips and tricks on how to get those fun photos and short videos for Rain stories on your social media handles.
Apple iPhone's Cinematic Video Mode is are best feature to get those fun Rain Stories.
"Cinematic mode (4K at 24 fps) creates immersive storytelling when filming someone walking through a drizzle or cityscape after a storm. Use rack focus to transition between foreground (e.g., raindrops on glass) and background (subject or scenery)," Gursimran Basra said to Deccan Herald.
"Also, turn on the Live Photos feature to capture waterfalls, puddles and rain-soaked streets. Then edit as 'Long Exposure' in the Photos app for silky water flow or dreamy rain effects," Basra added.
What to do if your iPhone gets drenched in rain or accidentally falls into a puddle of water?
Do not fall for the old myth of putting an iPhone with uncooked rice in a container to dry it. This particular process is very slow and very dangerous, as the particulate matter can enter ports and cause internal damage.
Apple recommends users first shake the iPhone gently to pull the excess liquid from the openings, such as ports and speaker grilles, and keep it on a table with open space for further drying.
If you feel there is still some liquid in ports, put the iPhone with silica gel sachets in an air-tight container for a few hours.
Only then, try using iPhone or plug a cable into the port to charge it.
