<p>The NDMC will soon digitise birth and death records dating between 1917 and 1985. The records will include the death certificate of Jawaharlal Nehru and birth and death records of Indira Gandhi, among other prominent figures.<br /><br />The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) decided to digitise certificates of this period as the hard copies of certificates are dilapidated. “It is required to preserve the certificates in the original format. Even though we had carried out digitisation of recent records, this period was not touched before. The hard copies will be scanned and the records then digitised,” a senior NDMC official said.<br /><br />With digitisation, families do not have to spend time in queues at the centres collecting the certificates. The data can be viewed online or the families can collect print-outs from the centres.</p>.<p> There will be almost no manual effort with employees not having to spend time looking up old documents. Also, there will be no fear of losing data. The NDMC has already awarded the tender to a software company and work on the project will start soon.<br /><br />“We regularly have people coming in with requests for copies of certificates of this period. The records are in poor condition now,” said the official.<br /><br />The council has birth and death records, both institutional and non-instituitional, of people in its jurisdiction. It also has records from the birth and death Registrar’s office. <br /><br />Apart from the NDMC-run hospitals, the records that the council has are from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Safdarjung Hospital, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre, Primus Hospital, Northern Railway Central Hospital and Lady Hardinge, among others.<br /><br />Earlier, digitisation of records have been carried out in phases. The digitisation of birth and death certificates of 1982-2008 and 2008 to the current period was carried out by the council. This is one of the online projects launched by the council.</p>
