The Yuvajana Sramika Raithu Congress Party (YSRCP) has won the Andhra Pradesh assembly elections by a landslide majority on Thursday. They are leading in 150 seats in the 175-seat Assembly inflicting a humiliating defeat to ruling Telugu Desam Party of former Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu. The TDP has an edge in 25 seats.

Actor Pawan Kalyan, of new entrants Janasena party, are trailing in both Bhimavaram and Gajuwaka assembly seats that he contested. The BJP and Congress failed to register any success.

The YSRCP also continued their victorious march by trampling the TDP by securing the lead in 24 out of 25 Lok Sabha seats. TDP stalwarts such as former union minister Pusapati Ashok Gajapati Raju and Galla Jayadev were trailing. NTR’s daughter D Purandeswari of BJP and former CBI JD VV Lakshmi Narayana of JSP were defeated in Visakhapatnam LS constituency.

“The never before mandate in AP history came with a lot of responsibility. It also says a lot about the credibility of the winner. Like my father who won the 2004 and 2009 elections, I want to repeat history. Give me six months to a year’s time to be reckoned as best CM,” Jagan said addressing the media.

Conceding defeat, Naidu tendered his resignation to Governor ESL Narasimhan. “We will have to analyse the defeat and then only will be able to tell people out our future course of action,” Naidu said.

Jaganmohan Reddy improved his 2014 performance by winning the Pulivendula seat with a massive majority of 90,543 votes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao wished the YSRCP chief on his victory. Chief Secretary LV Subrahmanyam met the incumbent Chief Minister at the Tadepalli residence and discussed on the possible date of taking oath.

The party leaders and newly-elected MLAs have met their leader and decided that the legislature party will meet on May 25 and formally elect Jagan as their leader.

The oath-taking ceremony was initially expected to take place in the holy temple town of Tirupati. However, the venue was shifted to Vijayawada considering the request of party leaders from Amaravati region.

While Jagan’s party had swept the Rayalaseema region, TDP’s loss seems to be uniform all over the state. The YSRCP made deep inroads into coastal Andhra, including the capital region of Amaravati. The Jagan wave also hurt several ministers in Naidu’s cabinet including his son Nara Lokesh.

As the focus shifted from Chief Minister Naidu camp office at Undavalli, to Jagan’s residence in Tadepalli, additional police force and traffic police have been rushed to regulate crowds at Jagan’s residence. In contrast, there was a sullen mood at the TDP party office here.
