Drivers' welfare trust: Namma Yatri to contribute 2% of platform’s annual revenue

Bengaluru: Namma Yatri on Wednesday launched the 'Namma Driver Welfare Trust' (NDWT), an initiative focused on improving long-term financial and social security for drivers on the ride-aggregator app across Karnataka.

The trust, designed as a legally registered and independently governed entity, will be funded through a fixed contribution of 2% of Namma Yatri’s annual revenue. It will offer drivers accident and medical support, educational scholarships, and access to financial tools, among other amenities.

The NDWT will begin accepting member applications in July and will be fully operational by August 15. All drivers on the platform will be eligible to be members of the trust, provided they meet the minimum ride requirement of two to three rides per day, said Shan MS, co-founder of Namma Yatri.

"So far, drivers have not had access to proper social security. While both the state and central governments continue to provide support in various ways, it is structured and not easily accessible. What we are aiming to create is a decentralised community run and owned trust, which provides drivers with both financial and non-financial support. We are keeping the entire process simple, transparent, and 100% digital," he stated at the second edition of the 'Namma Sarathi Sangama'.

Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, chief guest at the event, described the initiative as "a significant step towards supporting the drivers of Namma Yatri and their long-term welfare".

Auto and cab drivers also raised concerns about the absence of cancellation charges and low fares for intercity rides on the Namma Yatri app compared to other ride aggregator platforms.
