In a deal that would widen its presence in the Telugu TV market–the second-largest regional market in India in terms of revenue potential – Star India has decided to acquire the broadcast business of Maa Television Network.

Both the companies declined to comment on the size of the deal but industry experts believe that the acquisition could have cost Star India around Rs 2,500 crore-Rs 3,000 crore.
Star has very limited presence in the Telugu market.

Maa Television Network is the number one broadcast network in Telugu language and has a strong trajectory of growth driven by fiction content and movies, Star India said.

The deal will come into effect after necessary regulatory formalities and the broadcast business of Maa TV will be integrated with the business of Star India, it said.

Nimmagadda Prasad and film personalities K Chiranjeevi, Akkineni Nagarjuna, and Allu Arvind are the main promoters of Maa TV Network. It has a bouquet of four channels — Maa, Maa Music, Maa Movies, and Maa Gold.
