<p>As per the mega-investment plan in the road sector, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said that the country’s national highways would be expanded by 25,000 km in 2022-23 under the Prime Minister’s Gati Shakti National Master Plan for Multi-modal Connectivity.</p>.<p>The current expansion plan is expected to help the faster movement of people and goods. Around Rs 20,000 crore will be mobilised through innovative ways of financing to complement the public resources, Sitharaman added.<br /><br />Adding 25,000 km means, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has to build 70km roads per day, which is almost double the rate of 40km that was set for 2022.</p>.<p><strong>Also Read | <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/business/union-budget/union-budget-to-create-new-opportunities-for-people-pm-modi-1076981.html" target="_blank">Union Budget to create new opportunities for people: PM Modi</a></strong><br /><br />In 2020-21, the construction of roads per day had increased to 36.5 per cent as against 28 km in 2019-20.<br /><br />The Economic Survey 2021-22 released on Monday said that "There has been a consistent increase in the construction of National Highways/roads since 2013-14 with 13,327 kms of roads constructed in 2020-21 as compared to 10,237 kms in 2019-20, indicating an increase of 30.2 per cent over the previous year." In 2021-22 (till September), 3,824 kms of the road network was constructed, the survey said.<br /><br />The Union Budget 2022-23 has provided an enhanced outlay of Rs 1.99 lakh crore for the highways sector. Launched in October last year, the plan is aimed at coordinated planning and execution of infrastructure projects and bringing down logistics costs.<br /><br />The Minister also said that the data exchange among all mode operators will be brought on Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP), designed for Application Programming Interface (API).
