The installation, first outside the US, would offer students first practical understanding of Hadoop, which is one of the widely used open source cloud system.

According to Yahoo Labs Senior Vice-President Prabhakar Raghavan “with the installation of cluster in IIT-M, we have provided researchers to scale up their research on translation on web, analysis of data etc, which cannot be done without compute power.

“Hadoop has been evolving as de-facto standard for cloud OS and the faculty along with their students have already learnt about it in theory,” Pradeep said. Yahoo is one of the major contributors for development of Hadoop, besides other corporations like IBM.

“Besides contributing for Hadoop, we also use the system in many of our appliccations,” Pradeep said. Besides IIT Mumbai, Yahoo has agreements with Karlsruhe Institute of Technology Germany and Infocom Development Authority (IDA), Singapore to install similar clusters.
