South India’s 1st wheelchair cricket camp at Bengaluru

A city-based organisation for the differently abled is set to host South India's first wheelchair cricket camp in the city.

The Divyaang Myithri Sports Academy will host the three-day coaching camp for beginners. Players from Hyderabad, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are expected to participate in it.

As part of the camp, over 50 players from across different states will be trained by professional Indian wheelchair cricketers like Somjeet Singh—who is the captain of India's wheelchair cricket team—and others, along with Karnataka team players.

Shivaprasad, who ranks fifth in the country in wheelchair tennis, and his four para-athlete friends founded the academy that imparts training for the differently-abled in wheelchair cricket and wheelchair tennis.

Speaking of the camp, Shivprasad said: "Wheelchair cricket can help the differently-abled to overcome the social barriers and gain better self-confidence to a great extent."

"Our coaching camp will not only help these budding players to do well in cricket but will also enable them to have a fitness routine for a better and healthier future," he added.

The dates for the camp are yet to be finalised. The organisation is presently crowdfunding to support the coaching of the participants.
