The city police shot at the leg of a habitual offender as they foiled his escape attempt during a hot chase in Chikka Basti in Jnanabharathi in west Bengaluru on Saturday.

The accused, identified as Shakir (22), is a native of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh.

He was nabbed along with his associate Danish (19), who was riding along with him on a bike, the police said.

The police said the incident happened around 3 pm on Saturday at 3rd Block, Vishweshwaraiah Layout near Chikka Basti, where a team of policemen at a picketing point were conducting random checks on vehicles.

Shakir and Danish, who were approaching on a bike, took an abrupt U-turn after spotting the police. The officers grew suspicious and chased after the bike to nab the duo.

Shakir had a machete with which he allegedly attacked Chandra Layout assistant sub-inspector Kalegowda in a bid to escape.

Police sub-inspector Santosh, who was on the spot, asked Shakir to surrender and when he tried to escape, Santosh initially fired in the air, after which he shot at Shakir’s leg to immobilise him.

Investigation revealed that Shakir was involved in chain snatchings in Chandra Layout, Siddapura and Rajajinagar.

Kalegowda and Shakir have been admitted to Victoria Hospital for treatment. The Chandra Layout police have registered a case.
