The BBMP council meeting was adjourned to Wednesday after paying condolence to deputy mayor Ramila Umashankar, who passed away on October 5.

Ramila, the JD(S) corporator from Kaveripura ward, died of a heart attack barely a week after she was elected as the city’s deputy mayor.

Members of the council, including Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun, paid condolences to the deputy mayor. Cutting across party lines, most of the members urged Gangambike to rename a prominent road in Kaveripura ward after
Ramila.

BJP corporator Dr Raju said: “Most of the corporators are working day and night without rest and this has led to health issues. Ramila Umashankar, too, had health issues due to the work pressure and lack of rest.”

Drivers’ strike

The BBMP-owned solid waste management compactors went on a strike on Monday over pending payments to the drivers.

More than 25 drivers staged a protest in front of the BBMP head office ahead of the council meeting.

According to the drivers, they have not been paid for more than three months. “The maintenance work of the compactors is given to TPS Infrastructure Limited. But the civic body has not paid us our salaries yet,” a driver said.
