Online retail and commerce platform eBay Inc on Thursday officially opened its latest global development centre in Bangalore, with plans to hire 1,000 engineers here over the next three years.

The new centre will host several centres of excellence for both eBay Marketplaces and PayPal.

“Bangalore is known around the world as the centre for technology innovations in India.

We are looking to tap into the large pool of software engineering talent in Bangalore, who will innovate with us and create the future of commerce,” eBay Marketplaces Vice-President (Technology and Sciences) Ken Moss told reporters at the centre’s opening, adding that India’s software engineering talent will be a critical driver for the company’s long-term success.

The establishment of the Bangalore development centre follows the company’s Chennai centre that is already running with a team of over 2,000 engineers. The Bangalore centre currently has over 300 engineers, whose number would go up to 1,000 by 2016, Moss said.

“The engineers at our centres work on a variety of projects including big data, platform applications, analytics, consumer mobile apps, better customer and payment experiences and information security architecture among others,” he said.

The work at the 150,000-sq feet Bangalore centre will contribute to eBay’s global operations, making it a premier development centre among 16 similar ones around the world.

Meanwhile, Karnataka IT, BT and Science & Technology Minister S R Patil, who attended the centre’s opening, said, “I am sure that with eBay and PayPal setting up their facility in Bangalore, e-commerce will get a big boost.”

“I am told that eBay Inc intends to focus on e-commerce penetration in Tier II and Tier III cities... Sitting in a remote village, a farmer or an artisan can find market for his goods anywhere in the world and get paid instantly,” Patil added.
