A 19-year-old Mount Carmel College student committed suicide by consuming pills outside the college premises on Thursday.

The student, Shiny, was in the first year of the B.Sc course and was a resident of Cottonpet. The police are awaiting the post-mortem report to ascertain what type of pills she consumed.

According to the police, the incident occurred between 4 pm and 5 pm at a bus stand near the college. She suddenly collapsed and her friends rushed her to Bowring Hospital where she succumbed later, the police said.

The High Grounds police were informed of the incident and rushed to the hospital and conducted inquiries. The police learnt from one of her friends that Shiny had recently broken up with her boyfriend and was depressed.

The police suspect that she was prepared to kill herself as she had bought the pills with her and could have consumed them in the evening after college.

Shiny had left home on Thursday around 7.30 am, telling her parents that she had classes and had reached the college by around 8 am, the police said. Her father, a businessman, is the complainant in the case. The High Grounds police have registered a case of unnatural death
