People crossing the busy Tumakuru Road may finally look forward to a safe passage as work on subways at Nagasandra and Dasarahalli metro stations will begin soon.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has awarded the tender to Simplex Infrastructures Limited, which will build the two subways at a cost of Rs 12.44 crore. The contract sets an 18-month deadline but officials said the work could be completed in a year.

"The ground survey will begin in the next two days and final plans will be drawn up within two or three weeks. We hope to complete the project within a year," a source in the BMRCL told DH.

Local residents, who have long fought for the subway, welcomed the move, saying the subways would cut the risk faced by pedestrians. "These subways will be a blessing for all. Many people have been killed or injured. We hope the work is completed quickly," said Subhash Shetty, a resident of Nagasandra.

Traffic disruptions are expected on the road later as the cut and cover project involves the digging of the road. "Steps will be taken to reduce the impact on traffic as Tumakuru Road is among the busiest in the city. We will also consult the traffic police before beginning the work on the ground," an official said.

Officials said precast segments would be used to minimise the time for road-cutting. "The subway is planned to be six metres wide and three metres high. Making these segments will take six to eight months. The road will be cut and 1.2-metre-long precast segments will be lowered, after which covering works will be taken up," they said.

Work will be taken up on one side of the road and only a part of the road will be cut, allowing vehicles to move through the remaining stretch. "The entire cut and cover work can take 10-15 days," they said.
