3 Bengaluru institutes ace NIRF rankings

Three institutes from Bengaluru have secured top places in the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) list 2019 released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development on Monday.

The prestigious Indian Institute of Science has been placed second on the overall ranking list, which has been topped by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras. IIT-Delhi was placed third. Two other educational landmarks from the city, the Indian Institute of Management and the National Law School of India University, have topped the management institute and law school categories, respectively.

Jawaharlal Nehru University and Banaras Hindu University were ranked seventh and 10th respectively in the overall ranking list which was dominated by the IITs. Of the top 10 institutes, seven are IITs.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, was named the best medical sciences institute while Jamia Hamdard topped the pharmacy list.

Delhi University’s Miranda House was ranked the best among colleges while St Stephen’s College was ranked fourth. The NIRF is being published since 2016.

G Raghuram, Director, IIM Bangalore, said: “This is entirely due to the efforts of the IIMB faculty and staff – both current and former, past leadership, the board, students and alumni, and the supporting eco-system. The rankings are based on graduation outcomes, research and professional practice, outreach and inclusivity, teaching, learning and resources, and perception.

"I would specifically give credit to the earlier leadership of the institute and the response of the faculty and staff, at least over the past decade, who have often made difficult, but the right choices in setting the direction for and contributing to the institute. This has paid off in terms of research and professional practice, and teaching, learning and resources. IIM Bangalore has often been the pioneer in outreach and inclusivity. All this has enhanced the positive perception and the graduation outcomes, especially in attracting top-rated students into IIM Bangalore," he added.
