The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Thursday began constructing a flyover on the outer ring road at Kittur Rani Chenamma Circle (near Deve Gowda petrol bunk) at a cost of Rs 35.8 crore.

Five years after the foundation stone was laid, the BBMP has finally taken up the construction to ease the traffic along the outer ring road. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) have deposited Rs 1.35 crore and Rs 1.28 crore respectively with the BBMP to shift their property falling in the way of construction.

The 352-metre-long and 17-metre-wide flyover will be constructed by M Venkatrao Infrastructures in 18 months.

The outer ring road that connects Mysore Road with Kanakapura Road witnesses a huge traffic density of 10,000 passenger car units per hour.

According to the BBMP officials, the flyover will reduce traffic congestion by about 65 per cent as it will be used by the vehicles heading towards Kanakapura and those vehicles going to Padmanabhanagar will go beneath it.

The BBMP has said that it needs about 2,688 sq metre space for the construction of the flyover and over 200 trees will be felled for the project.
