Acharya to inaugurate Centre of Excellence today

Addressing a news conference here on Monday, University of Mysore, Vice Chancellor, Prof V G Talawar said that Centre of Excellence will involve forty inter-disciplinary projects from various departments such as Anthropology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Botany, economics and sociology.Around 40 project assistants and three post doctoral fellows will be working under this programme.

He said that the first installment of Rs 33.33 crore has been released by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in August 2009 for creating the centre of excellence and to strengthen the teaching learning infrastructure. He said that instrumentation facility has been established in the new wing of Department of Biotechnology.

The facility is supported with various instruments such as Advanced confocal Microscope, fluorescent microscope, biofermentor and bioreactor.

A one-day orientation workshop on ‘Extraction and characterisation of bioactive metabolites’ was conducted for research students, he added.

He said that a browsing centre with 120 computers has been established in the library building of Manasagangothri campus. Networking facilities have been created at Mandya and Hassan centres. Post-graduate teachers have been provided with computer to support their teaching and research activities and help the administration of e-governance.

Prof Talawar said that 43 classrooms have been modernised. The library is equipped with computerised database and subscription of e-journals and books is in progress, he added.
Two hostels for 150 post-graduate women and another for 250 under-graduate students are being constructed.
