Thief strikes house; decamps with ` 2 lakh booty

Threatens occupants at knife point; police officials visit spot

According to police, the miscreant gained entry into the house of Appaswamy, a retired teacher during midnight after breaking open the backdoor. He threatened Appaswamy and his wife Rajeshwari with a knife and forcibly snatched jewellery and ` 10,000 cash kept in the almirah.

He also snatched a chain weighing about 40 gms from the couple’s daughter Latha. According to Latha, the thief also tried to molest her in front of her 10-year-old daughter Sagarika. The family which lives in a rented house, was seen shattered and shocked.
Latha has been living with her parents for many years along with her daughter who  recently underwent surgery at Narayana Hrudayalaya.

Appaswamy and Latha planned to leave for Bangalore on Monday morning for Sagarika’s regular post surgery check-up and kept the money, drawn from bank on Saturday, in the locker.

A traumatised retired teacher said they are living rented house and the house owner was also threatening the family to vacate the house from few days. The owner’s son had also warned of hiring goondas to forcibly vacate them from the house.

DCP Rajendra Prasad and other senior police officials visited the spot.  The dog squad was also pressed to gather clues on the thief. Vidyaranayapuram Police have registered a case.

Constable commits suicide

Close on the heels of a City Armed Reserve (CAR) police head constable shooting self to death while on duty at Parakala mutt outpost here recently, another CAR constable has committed suicide by hanging self to a tree in Vijayanagar limits here on Monday.

Mahesh (31), is the victim. He was found hanging from a tree near Vijayanagar tank.  A native of Hunsur, he was living with his wife and a baby at Manchegowdana Koppal.

Though the reason for his extreme step is not known, sources said Mahesh was running in debt due to loss in the chit fund business.

He was also a regular punter for the race club. Mahesh had returned from his duty on Sunday night and went outside. But, he never returned, the sources said. Vijayanagar police have booked a case and are investigating.
