Police said on Saturday that Rizwan had an affair with a girl for seven years and their marriage was fixed by their families. An engagement ceremony was performed a few months ago.

The girl’s family, however, later cancelled the marriage proposal claiming Rizwan was unemployed and a man of dubious character. The sudden volte-face angered Rizwan who allegedly began issuing threats to the girl and her family, sources said, adding that he even threatened to throw acid on his fiancee’s face if she ventured out. A panchayat was later convened to settle the matter in which it was decided that the girl’s family would not be harassed and intimidated by the boy’s family.

“Barely days after the panchayat, hundreds of obscene posters of the girl appeared on the walls of several localities in the city,” the girl’s family members alleged. But Rizwan claimed that the girl’s family had cancelled the marriage proposal when he refused to transfer some properties to the girl’s name, sources said.

Superintendent of police P P Singh said Rizwan had been arrested after it was found he had got “objectionable” posters pasted in the city.

“We are trying to provide security to the girl and her family as they are very scared,” the official said.
