Not surprisingly, they expect the same global standards in salons back home. This demand from discerning customers has prompted various Indian as well as international hair and beauty brands to open up exclusive salons and spas in India.

These brands also realise the value of technically trained manpower who can provide service on a par with global standards.

Hence, many have also ventured into providing world class training in beauty and hair care.

Beautician courses

Gone are the days when a beautician could manage with just some knowledge of threading and waxing. Today, beautician courses offered by global institutes are elaborate and enable budding beauticians to create a niche for themselves in this flourishing industry. Lucrative and promising job prospects have also played a vital role in enhancing the importance of beautician courses.

The nature and duration of these beautician courses are varied. There are crash courses in beauty and certificate and advanced courses in beauty culture. While the duration of a crash course is one week, the duration of short and long-term certificate courses in beauty therapy can range from 30 hours to 6 months.

These courses cover everything from facials and massages to preparation of face masks and packs. Besides covering all the major aspects of beauty care, beautician courses also incorporate practical classes for students.

Hair styling courses

Hair styling is comparatively new in India and modern hairstyling is all about scientific methods combined with the creativity and imagination of the hairstylist. There are certificate, short-term, long-term and advanced courses in hair styling.

While the duration of short-term courses in basic hair styling is 30 hours, the duration of long-term courses ranges from 3 to 6 months. These courses cover everything from hair trichology and hair disorders to shampooing,  chemical job and hair styling.

While a stylist, as the name suggests, is all about styling and grooming hair, a dresser is usually the one who cuts, perms and colours hair. Hairstylists should be creative, have an eye for details and be confident of  their abilities.

No matter what the duration of the course is, it is practical knowledge that matters most in beauty therapy and hair treatments. And, even after several years of experience in the field, beauticians need to constantly update their skills to meet the growing expectations of customers.
