With the ever-increasing demand for engineers, engineering is now the most sought-after course when compared to other courses. From medical treatment and mobile communication to modern transport systems, there are many opportunities for engineering graduates. Hence, the takers for these courses have been increasing every year.

However, only a few students actually take up engineering because of a passion for the subject. Most of the students pursue the course due to parental pressure. Ajay of BMS College of Engineering says that choosing this course was his ‘father's decision’, rather than his. "My father is a commerce graduate and he didn’t want me or my brother to become commerce or management graduates. He felt that there are vast opportunities in engineering than in any other course. So, my brother studied engineering and it’s now my turn. I am fulfiling the dreams of my father,” smiles Ajay.

“I have a selected group of friends and majority of them say that their parents forced them to take up this course. One of my friends was interested in computer science, but following recession, his father felt that there would be no scope for computer science graduates. So, he forced his son to pursue mechanical engineering. My friend is not at all happy,” he adds.

There are some who have selected this course because of their passion for it. Badrinath, a tele-communication student at R V College of Engineering, says that it’s sheer interest which drove him towards taking up engineering course. “Since childhood, I am interested in how electronic things work. So, I took up electronics for my PUC. I didn’t get seat for electronics in engineering, hence I zeroed in on tele-communication which is more or less similar to electronics. I can’t say it’s parental pressure, but it was obviously their wish too,” he says.

“Some of my classmates had admitted in a personality development class that they have chosen this course merely because of parental pressure,” he adds.

Richard Rodrigues of AMC Engineering College too has the same opinion. “I studied diploma and worked for a company for a year. I was not satisfied with my degree as my wish was to become an engineer. So, I resigned my job and joined mechanical branch to fulfil my burning desire,” he says. “A friend of mine is much interested in poetry and story writing. He wanted to pursue his career in film industry. But, his parents didn’t allow him to take up his passion. Now, he is struggling hard to finish the engineering course,” he explains.
