Pooja Gandhi is about to break the dry spell in her career. With not a single release in the last nine months, the actress is all set to entertain her audience with a slew of releases. The Mungaru Male actress has also signed a Tulu movie being produced by R Dhanraj, who bagged national award for his earlier movie – Koti Chennaiah.

Pooja, who is busy shooting the film in the coastal areas of Padubidri, Karkala and Moodabidri, tells Metrolife about her experience of working in a period drama for the first time. She plays the role of a court dancer Siddhu in this film which has been titled Beere Devapoonje. “This is one of the performance-orientated roles. My character has both positive and negative shades and it is really challenging to enact it. Moreover, I have to change many costumes and wear a heavy dress the entire day which is tiresome,” Pooja says.

What made her do a Tulu movie when she is so much in demand in Sandalwood? “I am always open to new roles. And I have not done a historic subject so far. When it comes to Sandalwood, I have some of the best offers in my hand. In Shivarajkumar’s Jogayya, I have got an important role. My other films Suhasini and Jai Hind are also being made,” she answers.

Beere Devapoonje has actor Siddharth in the title role. Veteran artistes Leelavathi and Umashree too have prominent roles. To enhance her performance in the film, Pooja has already started learning Tulu. “The language we are using in the film is not normal Tulu. It is the old version of the language. And I am struggling to speak in it as it contains a lot of tongue-twisting words. I had thought of doing voice dubbing myself, but it seems impossible now,” feels Pooja.

Pooja’s other films Na Rani Nee Maharani, Aptha and Tavarina Runa are complete and lined up for release. “I am thrilled about Na Rani Nee Maharani as I have played double role for the first time. Since no film of mine has released in the recent past, I am excited and praying for the best.”
