Woman gang-raped, auto driver nabbed

Police have arrested an auto driver in this connection and are on the lookout for three of his accomplices, including a juvenile.

According to police, the victim, a second year BA student in Delhi University, was waiting for the office cab near her home early November 3 morning when three men who came in an autorickshaw overpowered her and bundled her into the vehicle. They then sped away towards an isolated, forested area and repeatedly raped her.

The four men kept their 19-year-old victim confined for about 10 hours and sent her back in another autorickshaw around 4 pm. While releasing her, they are believed to have searched her bag and noted down her mother’s mobile phone number.

Interestingly, though the girl narrated the horror to her mother on the same day of the incident, her relatives did not file a police complaint fearing it would tarnish their family honour.

However, when one of the culprits, auto driver Ranbir, started calling her mother and threatened her with dire consequences if they approached the police, the family members lodged a complaint on November 7.

The police started a technical surveillance of the caller’s mobile and it was found that the SIM card was purchased with fake identity proof. After failing to arrest the culprits, the police tried another trick to trap them. They asked the victim to call Ranbir over the phone and request him for financial help, saying her mother had been admitted to hospital.

When Ranbir came to the hospital, the police arrested him. Ranbir (23) reportedly told the police they were observing the movements of the victim for the past three months.
