HC stays chairman's appointment at BU

The appointment, made on December 2, was challenged by B C Mylarappa, a professor at the Sociology Department, on the ground that it was in violation of Section 34(7) of the Karnataka State University Act, 2000.

He had claimed that Dr Chetty was also the chairman of Sri Alamappli Venkatramaiah Karmika Adhyayana Peetha, a study chair funded by the State, and hence his appointment violated the one-man one-post principle adopted by the University. He had contended that only the University syndicate could make such appointments and neither the registrar nor the vice-chancellor had the authority to do so. Justice V Jaganathan passed the interim order.

Quota for agriculturist

The High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday directed the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University to reserve seats for a student belonging to agriculturist families and holding a piece of agricultural land. Allowing a petition filed by Aftab Yellapur, a resident of R T Nagar seeking admission to Bachelor of Veterinary Science, Justice S Abdul Nazir observed: “If a family holds one gunta of agricultural land irrespective of his income, student should be treated as an agriculturalist and the varsity should reserve the seat for such student.”

The court has also directed the Veterinary University to get approval for the rules and statute. The Court further directed the State government not to interfere in the admission process of the University.

The University had cancelled Aftab Yellapur’s admission on the ground that he didn’t depend on the income from agriculture for livelihood as his father is an employee of the KSRTC.

The varsity  had reserved 23.8 per cent seats to agriculturalist family.
