Shivappa's wife, who was travelling with him, sustained minor injuries, they said.
Shivappa (65) has been admitted to a private hospital here and is stated to be in a critical condition while his wife is stated to be out of danger, hospital officials told PTI.
The accident occurred when the former MP, who was proceeding from Sagar to Shimoga, lost control of his vehicle, police said.
Shivappa, a former Congress Lok Sabha MP, joined BJP in 2008.
