Udupi, of the Krishna temple fame

Mention Udupi, and the connotations are immediate, that of the famous Udupi restaurants spread across the world, and that of the  Krishna temple.

The city is the headquarters of the Udupi district. It is believed that the town derived its name from the Tulu word Odipu, linked to a temple at Malpe.

Udupi is known for the Krishna Math (Temple of Lord Krishna). The Math was founded by Vaishnavite saint Madhvacharya in the 13th century.

The administration of the temple at Udupi is handled by the Ashta Mathas (eight temples).
Udupi is also famous for the Paryaya festival held once in two years.Then, there is the celebrated Kanaka kindi, a window in the temple, associated with the legend of Kanakadasa, a great devotee of Krishna.
