Leela Anjanappa passes away

Wife of the late K N Anjanappa, she leaves her son and two daughters and a large number of admiring relatives and friends.

Born Leela Suvarna in Mangalore, she moved to Mysore after her marriage. In Mysore, she involved herself with the Girl Guide movement, and went on to become the State Commissioner of Girl Guides, then National Commissioner, and finally became an International Commissioner of the movement.

She was awarded the Silver Elephant, the highest award in Bharat Scouts and Guides.
Her dream of a playground for street children became a reality when she founded the Makkala Koota, Mysore, way back in 1943. Her interests were varied and included sports. She was president of the district table tennis association and vice-president of the State table tennis association.

She was also the honorary secretary of the Vani Vilas Ladies Club, Mysore for 40 years.
Leela Anjanappa was also involved in social welfare projects such as welfare of prisoners, family planning centres, social welfare board of Karnataka, and women's savings campaign. Active in various women's organisations, she served the All India Women's Conference in various capacities.
