Last Updated 30 January 2011, 17:53 IST

While the Wednesday’s attack on an RTI activist in UP’s Sonebhadra district, who had sought information on the works under the MNREGA, was the latest in the series, many other activists have also incurred the wrath of the elements involved in corrupt deeds in the past.

RTI activist Salim Beg was allegedly threatened by the police in Moradabad district after the information commission imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on a superintendent of police and Rs 6,000 on the district police chief for not furnishing the information sought by Beg.

Beg who sought information on the recruitment of police personnel was implicated in false cases and had to spend some time in jail on trumped up charges, the activists alleged.
Only recently he had been threatened again after he sought information from the Moradabad police on encounters.

Another activist was arrested on trumped up charges after he filed an application under the RTI.
